David Kitonga is the proprietor of Kitonga Gardens Resort & Spa - a getaway gem tucked away in Mbiuni, Machakos County.

The businessman boasts over 20 years of experience as a teacher in Kenya before he immigrated to the United States of America where he lived and worked with his family.

Born and raised in Mbiuni, Kitonga and his 11 siblings had a tough life growing up and he resorted to selling livestock to pay for upkeep.

Some of the schools he taught include Siani Girls Secondary School in Narok County and Central High School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

"I was also a senior examiner with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) marking Biology paper one," he says.

Kitonga immigrated to the US in 2009 after winning a green card. He was able to fly his family to the North American country six months later.

He worked several jobs while processing his papers - gas station attendant, construction worker, and in healthcare as a nursing home caregiver.

"While I awaited clearance for my papers, I worked in a local shop as an attendant for three months. I learnt a lot in the course of interacting with Americans," he said.

Joining forces with his wife who worked as a nurse, the two bought a block and setup an office where their son ran a business.

Kitonga always dreamt of investing back home, thus he bought a 100-acre piece of land where the resort was eventually built.

His son, an electrical engineer, and his daughter, an interior designer were responsible for designing the resort and were involved in its construction from the jump.

"At the time, we were still in the US and we sought a good architect through my son and his wife. We began with her and for a whole year we worked on the design," he said.

Kitonga Garden Resort & Spa delights its guests with stunning views of the Yatta Plateau, captivating sunrises, opulent rooms, and top-notch facilities and activities.
