The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has postponed the party's grassroots elections, citing the ongoing heavy rains that have wrecked havoc in some parts of the country.

The party had scheduled the polls for April 27, 29, and 30th. Chairperson of the National Elections Coordinating Committee, Emily Agnes Awita in a statement, explained that the decision was arrived at after a number of counties affected by floods wrote to the party.

Some of the counties that wrote to the party include; Kajiado, Wajir, Busia, and Siaya. ODM suspended the grassroots elections indefinitely.

"The National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) has received requests from Busia, Siaya, Kajiado, and Wajir counties where large sections of the respective counties are experiencing floods and related challenges occasioned by ongoing heavy rains for the review of its programme for the First Phase of ODM grassroots elections," Awita stated.

"Having reviewed the ground situation and assessed the requests, the NECC wishes to announce that the elections scheduled for 27th, 29th and 30th April 2024 are temporarily postponed as we assess the situation. These will resume as soon as the situation has improved."

The party sympathised with the families of Kenyans affected by the floods - rallying supporters to continue with other preparations before a new date can be announced.

"Any inconvenience is regretted as we stand in solidarity and sympathy with our members and Kenyans affected by the adverse weather conditions."
